Kitty: "It was an incredible experience that I'll never forget"
At Queen's University Belfast's Languages and Careers Festival 2024, Kitty Thomson shared her experience of an exchange to France, in Strasbourg.
Beyond the classroom
As a student at Queen's University Belfast, Kitty went to Strasbourg for a 9-month study abroad placement. Alongside her studies she was able to work part-time for a church and as a nanny to three young children. From leading Bible studies to whipping up lattes in a church café, and even caring for three adorable French children, Kitty's days were packed with excitement! Kitty notes how difficult it was at first to drive on the right, when she also had to ensure the safety of child passengers. Picture this – navigating French roads, on the "wrong" side, with precious cargo in tow. Talk about an adrenaline rush!
A melting pot of culture
Her student residence became a mini United Nations, sharing a roof with French and Albanian students. It was the perfect recipe for forging lifelong friendships and becoming fluent in French faster than you can say "Bonjour!".
Gastronomic paradise
Discovering the Alsace region, of which Strasbourg is the capital, was a remarkable culinary experience for her: tarte flambée, Alsatian beer, sausages, mulled wine... She was able to enjoy the very best of French and German gastronomy. And let's not forget the pièce de résistance – a glimpse of the world's oldest wine from 1472, which she spotted during her visit to the Cave des Hospices de Strasbourg! Thankfully, this one cannot be tasted.
Europe at your doorstep
With Strasbourg's prime location and a Schengen visa in hand, Kitty turned into a globe-trotter. From scaling the majestic Alps to strolling through romantic Paris, she could also easily hop across the border to Germany.
Kitty's time in Strasbourg was transformative. She returned with newfound confidence in French, the courage to tackle challenges abroad, and a toolkit of skills for her career. Now it’s your turn—don’t just dream of France, make it happen. Your Strasbourg story awaits!
