SAFE Project: How the EU will soon become a haven for threatened researchers

Students, Researchers

Campus France and the PAUSE programme, hosted by the Collège de France, have launched the European project "Supporting At-Risk Researchers with Fellowships in Europe" (SAFE), funded by the European Union.

The initiative aims to provide 60 fellowships for researchers outside the EU who face threats to their academic freedom. These fellowships will allow recipients to continue their research in an EU Member State for up to 24 months.

As political crises around the world continue to restrict academic freedom, the SAFE project seeks to make the European Union a haven for threatened researchers. Applications will open in mid-November 2024, and a matchmaking phase will begin in mid-October to connect researchers with host institutions.

This €12 million pilot project will run for three years and is coordinated by a European consortium, including Campus France, PAUSE, DAAD (Germany), and UNIMED (Italy), with the support of additional academic partners across Europe. The initiative includes calls for applications, fellowship management, and training workshops, with the goal of establishing a permanent European support mechanism for at-risk researchers.
