Paris 2024 Olympics: the crowning glory of top-level student athletes

Students

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games were a true triumph for French student athletes. With 34 medals won by 31 student athletes, including 12 gold, 13 silver, and 9 bronze, these young champions made a significant contribution to France’s excellent performance, placing fifth globally and first in Europe for the total number of medals.

Among the gold medallists were exceptional talents like Théo Faure in volleyball (INSA Toulouse), Nicolas Gestin in canoeing (Ecole d'Urbanisme de Paris), and Althéa Laurin in taekwondo (École des officiers de la gendarmerie nationale). The judo team, including Romane Dicko (Sorbonne Université) and Joan Benjamin Gaba (Marine Nationale), along with the rugby sevens team, also excelled, taking the top spot on the podium.

The silver and bronze medallists likewise displayed exemplary commitment and determination, proudly representing France in various disciplines such as fencing, archery, judo, and athletics. These achievements not only reflect their talent but also the high level of support provided to elite athletes within French universities.

Beyond the medals, the substantial participation of students in the Olympic Games highlights the importance of university sport in France. The Ministry of Higher Education, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, has reinforced its commitment to promoting sport on campuses. Through initiatives such as the creation of new sports facilities and making physical activities more accessible to all students, France is positioning itself as a leader in integrating sport into student life.

As attention now turns to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, French student athletes have already left their mark on these Olympic Games, demonstrating that France is not only a land of champions but also a model in supporting and developing university sport.
